In 1954, a new chair in child health was established by Professor Doðramacý. It was provided with a staff consisting of a professor - himself -, an assistant, two nurses and a clerk. Under Doðramacý's direction, work soon began in two rented rooms in a slum house where policlinics for sick and healty children. The basic shell of Hacettepe Child Health Center was dedicated at ceromonies on 4 June, 1954 by the aid of national and international organizations. Young physicians for the new hospital were personally recruited by Doctor Doðramacýand each would be sent to abroad for further specialization. doctor Doðramacý goal was to develop a center and programme comparable with the Boston Children's Medical Center. The staff grew, and in 1961 there were 25 physicians and 54 residents as house staff of the 150-bed childrens hospital.
On 8 July, 1958, the Hacettepe Children's Hospital was officially inaugurated. On the same day the Research Institute of Children Health was established as an autonomous unit directed by Doctor Doðramacý reporting to the dean of the medical faculty of Ankara University. In 1961 the Institute created a School of Health Sciences with divisions or high schools of nursing, medical technelogy, physical therapy and nutrition.
Unfortunately fire destroyed the Children's Hospital and Research Institute of Child Health building in late March 1961. But a new 250-bed Chidren's Hospital was completed in arecord time of less than six months. In response to growing needs for medical teaching and helth care, it was decided in 1961 to build a general hospital with 1000 beds and expand the Children's Hospital to350-beds. The Research Institute of Child Health and its affiliates had grown such an extend that by early 1963 proposal were made to transform it into faculty of medicine. Consequently, the Hacettepe Faculty of Medicine was created on 7 June, 1963as fourth medical faculty in Turkey. This faculty is the origin of the Hacettepe University.
Ýhsan Doðramacý was the first director (1954-1981) and was succeded by Namýk Çevik (1981 - 1988), Erol Kýnýk (1988-1992), Murat Tuncer (1992-2000) and Tezer Kutluk (2000-....).
